UP Approves Green Hydrogen Centres at IIT-BHU & MMMUT; Hydrogen Train to Run Between Varanasi–Gorakhpur

Uttar Pradesh has taken a major leap in clean mobility and hydrogen innovation under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy-2024, with the state approving two Centres of Excellence in Green Hydrogen at IIT-BHU and MMMUT Gorakhpur. The initiative, approved by UPNEDA, aims to accelerate hydrogen research, technology development, and industry adoption across the state.

A key highlight of the initiative is the proposed hydrogen-powered train between Varanasi and Gorakhpur, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Railways. This pilot project will test hydrogen storage, transportation, efficiency, and operational performance. In parallel, UPSRTC will deploy hydrogen-fuelled buses on the same route, positioning Uttar Pradesh as an emerging leader in clean mobility solutions.

IIT-BHU will function as the lead institution, while nearly 50% of the infrastructure will be established at MMMUT to expand research capabilities. The centres will place strong emphasis on biomass-based hydrogen production, leveraging Uttar Pradesh’s abundant agricultural biomass to enable low-cost, sustainable hydrogen generation.

To strengthen the innovation pipeline, the program includes an incubation centre designed to support 50 hydrogen-focused startups in five years, fostering a vibrant green-energy ecosystem in the region. With these initiatives, Uttar Pradesh is setting the foundation for large-scale hydrogen adoption and future-ready mobility infrastructure.
