State-owned Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has achieved a record milestone by generating 15,509 million units (MU) of hydropower during the financial year 2025–26, officials confirmed in Bengaluru.
This marks the highest-ever annual hydropower generation by the utility, surpassing the previous record of 13,853 million units recorded in FY 2024–25. The achievement reinforces Karnataka’s position as one of India’s leading hydropower-producing states, supported by an installed capacity of 3.63 GW.
According to the state Energy Department, the power generation was sourced from multiple river basins, including major hydel stations located in the Sharavathi, Kali, Varahi, Cauvery, Krishna, and Tungabhadra valleys.
KPCL Managing Director and Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Gaurav Gupta attributed the strong performance to improved maintenance practices across hydroelectric stations. He highlighted that even some of the oldest facilities delivered optimal output due to consistent operational efficiency and upgrades.
A significant contribution came from the Sharavathi and Varahi valleys, which together generated a record 8,696 million units, playing a key role in achieving the overall milestone.
Energy Minister KJ George credited favorable rainfall conditions along with efficient plant maintenance for the record output. He also acknowledged the efforts of KPCL’s officers and staff in ensuring reliable power supply and meeting the state’s increasing electricity demand.
The milestone underscores the critical role of hydropower in Karnataka’s energy mix and highlights the importance of sustainable water resource management combined with operational excellence.
