India, US, and Africa emerge as key growth markets beyond China.
Global Solar Additions Hit 380 GW in H1 2025, China Leads with 256 GW.
Global solar capacity additions surged to 380 GW in the first half of 2025, marking a 64% rise from 232 GW in the same period last year, according to energy think tank Ember. The milestone of 350 GW was achieved in June 2025—three months earlier than in 2024—underscoring the sector’s rapid expansion. China continued to dominate with 256 GW of new capacity, representing 67% of the global total and more than double the combined additions of the rest of the world. The surge was partly driven by a rush to complete projects ahead of new compensation rules in June. Outside China, installations reached 124 GW, a 15% year-on-year increase. India ranked second with 24 GW, up 49% from last year, followed by the US with 21 GW. Africa also showed strong momentum, with solar panel imports from China soaring 60%, signalling accelerating adoption across the continent.
