India Adds Record 55.29 GW Non-Fossil Power Capacity in FY26, Ranks Third Globally

India has achieved a major milestone in its clean energy transition by adding a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil power generation capacity in FY 2025–26. This significant addition has taken the country’s total non-fossil installed capacity to 283.46 GW, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced.

The achievement has propelled India to the third position globally in renewable energy installed capacity, surpassing Brazil, according to the Renewable Energy Statistics 2026 report. This marks a strong advancement in India’s position as a global leader in sustainable energy.

Joshi highlighted that in July 2025, renewable energy sources met a record 51.5% of India’s electricity demand, the highest-ever share recorded in the country. Furthermore, as of March 31, 2026, non-fossil sources contributed 29.2% of the total power generation during FY26.

A key milestone was reached earlier in June 2025, when India achieved 50% of its cumulative installed power capacity from non-fossil sources—five years ahead of its 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) target under the Paris Agreement.

The government is now focused on accelerating progress towards its ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. This target aligns with India’s commitments announced at COP26 and reflects the country’s strong push toward reducing carbon emissions and ensuring sustainable growth.

With consistent policy support, increasing investments, and rapid capacity additions, India continues to strengthen its leadership in the global renewable energy landscape.
