Gujarat Targets Solar Rooftop Installations on 10 Lakh Homes by 2027

Gujarat has set an ambitious target to install solar rooftop systems on 10 lakh homes by 2027, reaffirming its position as a national leader in renewable energy adoption. The announcement was made on World Energy Conservation Day, observed on December 14, by Rushikesh Patel, Gujarat’s Minister for Energy and Petrochemicals.

The large-scale rooftop solar initiative is expected to significantly reduce household electricity bills while promoting sustainable and decentralised energy practices across the state. Patel stated that the Central government’s PM Surya Ghar scheme is being implemented with strong incentives, enabling wider and faster adoption of rooftop solar installations by residential consumers.

Emphasising the importance of collective responsibility, the minister said that energy conservation must be a shared effort involving the government, industry, and citizens. He noted that conventional power generation methods cause long-term environmental harm, making the shift towards renewable energy and efficient consumption increasingly critical.

Gujarat continues to lead the country in rooftop solar electricity generation, serving as a benchmark for other states to follow. The state’s proactive policy framework, strong distribution infrastructure, and high public participation have contributed to its success in decentralised solar power deployment.

The expanded rooftop solar push is expected to strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and support India’s broader clean energy and climate commitments. The initiative also aligns with national goals to promote renewable energy access at the household level while encouraging responsible energy consumption.
