East Timor is embarking on a major clean energy milestone with the construction of its first large-scale solar power plant in 2026. The 72 MW project in Manatuto, developed jointly by Japan’s Itochu Corp and France’s EDF, will also feature a 36 MW battery energy storage system to ensure stable and reliable power supply.
Under a 25-year agreement, the plant will provide electricity to Electricidade de Timor-Leste (EDTL), significantly reducing the country’s dependence on costly diesel imports. EDTL Chairman Marito Ferreira highlighted that the initiative will lower energy costs, strengthen energy security, and support East Timor’s transition toward sustainable energy.
With over 90% household electrification already achieved, East Timor plans to phase out diesel plants, incorporate natural gas-based power, and expand renewables to achieve its net-zero target by 2050. The solar project represents a key step toward affordable, clean, and independent energy, powering the nation’s sustainable future.
